Scaphiodontophis annulatus found on Indigo Expedition.
One week into the first December 2013 expedition and surveys are going well. We didn’t know how it would go this time of year, but we certainly didn’t expect this half coral snake Scaphiodontophis annulatus to turn up!!!
Awesome!!!
Ever since I first interested in Central America I had wanted to see one of these snakes. It took six visits over six years searching through forests and swamps and then this turns up outside my bedroom door at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Just like that!
What a beauty, the photos I had seen (however beguiling) did not do the species justice. From the red-black-yellow head end that mimics a venomous coral snake to the brown rear 2/3 that along with the black dots has spectacular iridescence this was well worth the wait!
I hope it is not another six years until we find another secretive half-coral snake.
